Mr. Ricky L. Potts, Jr. is originally from Harmony, a small town in Southwest Indiana. He grew up hitting golf balls into the cornfield behind his house to go on to play 4 years Varsity golf at Northview High School. From there, after turning down several golf scholarships nationwide, he decided to attend Marian University, formerly Marian College, where he played 2 years on their men's golf team. After 2 years he transferred to Purdue University where he earned a degree in Computer Engineering with a focus on Computer Science.

One winter, while his now wife was finishing her MBA from Indiana University, his car was literally frozen solid to its parking space. He placed the car in park, went upstairs and said, “That’s it, we’re moving to Scottsdale!” A few months later they packed up and headed west.

While in Scottsdale, Ricky got a job working for Troon, the world’s largest golf course management company. He spent 3 years in the corporate office before relocating to Southwest Florida as Director of Marketing & Communications at Tiburón Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples. He spent 6 weeks as Assistant Golf Professional at Alpine Country Club, a private member-owned club in Cranston, Rhode Island, before relocating to Naples to finish his assignment at Tiburón. When Troon started managing The Fountaingrove Club, the only member-owned club in Sonoma County, he and his wife packed up and headed west… Again!

When Ricky landed in Wine Country, he had never sold memberships before. However, he was able to “figure it out” by coming to a club with then 224 full golf members. You may remember the devastating Tubbs Fire of 2017 that destroyed over 5,000 homes and businesses in Santa Rosa, California. Ricky doesn’t remember the fire as he was evacuating Hurricane Irma, the then fiercest hurricane to rock the continental United States causing mass flooding and utter devastation to SW Florida. Ricky was able to create a membership sales process that is easily scalable to be passed on to future generations. The club continues to rebuild, with plans to open a brand new $20 million clubhouse in December 2021. While at The Fountaingrove Club, Ricky managed a membership and marketing department that was able to successfully sell out of all available golf memberships, on a cap of 368 per the club’s Restated Bylaws, leaving the club in the best financial position in the history of the property. At the September 2021 Board Meeting, the club’s Board of Directors approved a detailed Golf Membership Waiting Policy presented through a detailed white paper recommendation.

In his free time, Ricky pens a popular lifestyle blog with a focus on electronic dance music (EDM). He also hosts a weekly podcast titled The Wednesday Match Play Podcast presented by MemberText featuring interviews with some of the golf industry’s biggest and brightest brands. He and his wife love to travel, have plans to visit every country in the world, and spend countless hours tracking down the latest local craft beers. With a passion for tracking things like steps, calories, water intake, sleep… He even tracks the beers and the wines he samples.

As a member of the Club Management Association of America, and The Golden State Chapter of CMAA, Ricky is striving to become a Certified Club Manager before he turns 40. With a desire to give back, Ricky sits on several Local and National CMAA Committees, and served as Co-Chairman of the 2021 Idea Fair Judging Committee.
